Mixti’s Voice Studio

I believe that our voices are as unique as our finger prints so I make sure to never put my students into boxes or to force them to fit my teaching style. Everyone gets their own individualized study of voice that is informed by how they best learn and always instills confidence in them and their abilities while giving them the tools to make music and express themselves however they would like to. It is important to teach holistically, recognizing that singing takes one’s body, emotions, heart, and mind to be successful. Health is a privilege and as a chronically disabled and neurodivergent person, I understand that most singing spaces in this world are ableist. I have tried to create an approach to singing that is truly inclusive and trauma informed. I teach voice through an anti-racist, non-gendered, trans-centered, anatomy-based, cross-training approach that refuses to put styles of music into a hierarchy and is committed to decolonization.

My students have a say in their education, we choose repertoire and make artistic choices together. We work on technique through specific exercises as well as through repertoire of differing levels and styles. I believe lessons and performance opportunities are equally important for a voice student. During a lesson, a student must be allowed to make mistakes, stop and start without being judged, and sing without feeling shame or the need to apologize when their body does not do what they want it to. They must also practice continuing through “mistakes”, focusing on staying in character throughout, and finding a way to turn ones anxiety into excitement in a performance setting.

I believe that everyone can sing and should because singing can have such a positive impact in every single part of our lives and can help us to stop judging and start loving ourselves and the world around us. Singing is one of the best forms of therapy I have found for my body, mind, and soul. I want to share the beauty of singing with all people which is why I teach lessons on a sliding scale and do not require that my students have previous musical knowledge or access to expensive scores. I will always meet my students where they are at because we all have something to say that is worth listening to no matter where we come from.

I have over six years of teaching experience having taught students from eight to seventy years old in various genres, languages, and styles. My specialties are opera, r&b, art song, folk, jazz, ballads, musical theatre, cumbia, soul, bachata, funk, country, hip-hop, house, rock, and merengue in over nine different languages. I have a great comfortability with working on songs from any style and genre as I believe the technique we work on can be translated to any and everything you want to sing.
